Design Story
Our challenge with Avant Carde was to design a deckbuilding game with the bombastic combos that players love, but that plays in only 25 minutes. Avant Carde achieves this goal by providing players with only 6 different types of powers to buy and build synergies with. These 6 different types of cards (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) are assigned their powers by “Patron” cards that sit in the center of the table. Avant Carde can be entirely changed up by simply replacing the 6 patron cards with a different set that provide new powers. My team and I designed 5 exciting sets of powers (including 2 micro expansions).
I believe that an arduous setup makes players get a game to the table less frequently. Avant Carde’s 6 stacks of numbers to buy from make the game consistent from play to play, but (like in the original deckbuilder, Dominion) it makes setup fiddly—you have to pull out each stack of cards from the box individually. To solve this, I engineered an original packaging solution called the “roll out deck box.” Simply roll out each deck box to have the stacks of cards already set up on the table. When you’re done, put the cards back in their stacks, then roll the boxes back up!
